Food

The impact of food on climate change comes from the energy in processing, transporting and preparing it and the greenhouses gases given off by animals. The choices made by food technologists make a big difference to this impact. More...

Design

Most energy comes from burning fossil fuels. This produces greenhouse gases which add to climate change. Designers need to think about the energy used in the production and use of products. The future of designing is in products that will benefit people and the planet.  More...

Ysgol Pont Afan

Ysgol   Pont Afan

We are the Eco committee of Ysgol Pont Afan.  Our group decided to get the pupils in our school to use less energy.  First we decided to find out how we used energy.

Our School

There are six classrooms in our school.  2 of these are in the mobile.  There is also a staff room, a hall, the kitchens and Mrs Evan’s office.

Electricity

We decided to do a survey of the things that use electricity in our school and how much they could use in Watts.

We used a current cost meter to record the electricity that we have used.

Our Electricity use in Watts right now.

Here is the graph

20/3/08
We got to work making posters next to all the computers to remind everyone, especially Mr Jones to turn off their computers when they weren’t using them. Energy monitors were appointed and they did spot checks on all the rooms.  Mrs Evans agreed not to leave her printer on when she wasn’t in her office.

2/4/08

We have written to the council asking them to replace our lights with more efficient ones.

10/4/08

We asked the PTA to help us organise an energy evening for the parents.

Oil

Mrs Evans found the oil bills for the last 5 years and this is the amount we used per week on average for each year.

We decided to record the remperature in our classroom to see if we could turn the heating down our change the settings on the timer.
