Solar Thermal
Hot water heating accounts for about 25% of domestic energy use. In the Welsh climate solar energy can be used to heat water for about 8 months of the year. More...
Hydrogen
The hydrogen fuel cell was invented by Sir William Robert Grove of Swansea in 1839.
Fossil Fuel
The energy in fossil fuels comes from the sun. The energy stored in fossil fuels was built up over millions of years. To replace this amount of energy by capturing it from the sun in plants and turning them into biofuels would require a huge amount of land. We need this land to produce food.
What makes up a Carbon Footprint?
This is perhaps the most obvious contribution to our carbon footprint. When fossil fuels are burnt they produce CO2 which has been locked away for millions of years is released. It is the rapid increase in our fossil fuel use that has caused global warming.More....
Main types of collector
There are two main types of collector, flat plate and evacuated tubes.
Flat plate consists of a black metal plate which either has pipes bonded to it or two metal plates which the water is trapped between. The collector has a layer of insulation behind it and a glass or clear plastic cover to trap more of the light energy. As water flows through the plate it is warmed by the sunlight.
An evacuated tube collector contains a small copper collector which is painted black. The glass evacuated tube prevents heat loss by conduction and convection. The glass tube also traps more of the suns light energy. The ends of the copper tubes are all sealed and are placed so they warm water circulating to the hot water tank. Evacuated tubes are more efficient than flat plate collectors but they are more expensive to produce. They are best for situations where space is limited.
